Clumping Bamboo

Ok, you have heard about running bamboo. They are certainly beautiful and offer a very nice forest effect - if you have the room. Clumping or non-invasive bamboo is yet another type of bamboo that is ideal for the small to medium yard. Other than creating a very tropical effect in your yard, the number one reason people purchase clumping or non-invasive bamboo is for wind protection or to screen the neighbor.

Clumping bamboo comes in a variety of colors, heights, culm thicknesses, leaf variations, growth patterns, and other characteristics to meet your personal tastes. Imagine a screen to block your view of an apartment complex turned into a tropical masterpiece of alternating black bamboo with green striped culms and yellow colored culms with green stripes. The black bamboo - Bambusa Lako is absolutely gorgeous and blocks 3 levels of the apartments while the bamboo with yellow culms with green stripes - Bambusa Eutuldoides "viridi vittata", offers a wonderful thick base with showy green leaves for extra privacy. Click here to see our complete line of clumping bamboo.

Bamboo in the Landscape Bamboo can be used to create a number of different landscape effects. Running bamboo can create a spectacular forest effect. In order to achieve this effect, you need to contain it by using barriers and keep the bamboo thinned in order to be able to walk through your forest. Clumping bamboo stays in one place and doesn't need a barrier, but can take up quite a large area over a period of years.

Careful planning is very important when considering bamboo in the landscape. Bamboo is one of the fastest growing grasses in the world. Both clumping and running bamboo can grow over 60 feet tall depending on the variety. Rainforest Bamboos can assist you with landscape design and recommend varieties well suited for your yard and location.

Can I Eat It? Absolutely... you can eat bamboo. Some varieties are quite delicious. Bamboo shoots are an important vegetable in the daily meals of many people in China, Taiwan, Thailand and other South East Asian countries. Shoots are sold fresh, or processed and sold commercially. Because of the increasing demand for bamboo shoots and limited use of open land in these countries, bamboo shoots are in high demand.

Some larger bamboo shoots can weight up to 15 lbs. Most bamboo shoots should be boiled between 208 and 215 degrees Fahrenheit for about 160 minutes. This process removes naturally occuring cyanogenic glycosides. These cyanogenic glycosides pose little health threat when properly boiled. You can find a wide variety of recipes on our site for bamboo shoots.

Bamboo For Screens Bamboo makes an excellent screen for privacy. Bambusa Oldhamii is a variety that doesn't take up much space, yet can screen off a three story apartment complex next door. Bambusa Oldhamii grows very straight and tall. In as little as 4 years, you can make your nosy neighbors "disappear". Of course, if you purchase larger bamboo, that can happen even sooner.

Bamboo Arts & Crafts Bamboo was always used for building shelter, water pipes, buckets and other necessities, but did you know that bamboo makes excellent arts and crafts materials. Check out the site "1000 Things You Can Do With Bamboo". Let your imagination run wild. As you grow bamboo, you will find that regular thinning makes your bamboo look that much better and gives you plenty of material for your own arts and craft ideas.

Bamboo Clothing Yes, you read correctly. Bamboo is even used for making clothing. Take a few minutes to visit Rich Delano's Bamboo Textile to see and purchase items made from bamboo. Once you have worked out in your bamboo grove wearing bamboo fabrics, you won't use anything else. I prefer the bamboo t-shirts. Yes, you too can become a member of the official bamboo nut club.

How Big Can Bamboo Get? Bamboo such as the tropical Dendrocalamus Giganteus can grow to be over 100 feet tall and over 12 inches in diameter. How would you like to mow that grass? Yes bamboo is a member of the grass family, but you certainly couldn't mow it. During the first few years of growth in some of the larger species, bamboo can grow almost 12 inches in one day. Don't worry, bamboo comes in a wide variety of culm diameters and eventual heights.
